But how many steps does an average person take per day? And are they enough?

Steps decrease with age

A 2011 study says adults over 18 take between 4,000 and 18,000 steps a day. Another 2011 study looked at children and teens and found that those under the age of 18 took between 10,000 and 16,000 steps a day. The number of steps drops significantly as teenagers approach the age of 18.

The CDC recommends that adults get at least 150 minutes of aerobic activity per week, such as brisk walking, which translates to approximately 15,000 steps per week (about 2,000 steps per day). For more health benefits, it is recommended to do 300 minutes of aerobic activity per week, which translates to about 30,000 steps per week (about 5,000 steps per day).
