The Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, has published the annual assessment on the impact of climate change on the security of the Allies. The report states that climate change is accelerating and has "a profound impact on the security of Allies".
Kosovo has been mentioned as one of the "hot spots" of the planet, due to extreme weather events, such as fires in 2017 and 2022, and severe floods in 2023. Climate change is expected to increase in frequency and intensity, challenging socio-economic stability and security in the region.
Currently, around 4,500 allied and partner troops operate in Kosovo as part of NATO's Kosovo Force (KFOR). Through this report, Stoltenberg emphasizes the importance of NATO remaining adaptable in a rapidly changing environment to ensure long-term peace and security.
